Özet

Çalışmada Osmanlı çocuk bakımı ve beslenmesinde oldukça önemli bir role sahip olup, 19 yüzyılın ikinci yarısında yaygın bir şekilde sürdürülen sütannelik ve sütninelik geleneği ele alınmıştır. Bebeğe süt vermesi için ücretle tutulan kimselerden sütnine olarak adlandırılanlar iki üç çocuk büyütmüş tecrübeli kadınlardan oluşmuştur. Genellikle fakir olup muhtaç durumda olan kadınlar sütanneliğe ve sütnineliğe başvurmuşlardır. Bu durumda çoğu zaman kendi çocuklarını riske atıp hastalanmalarına hatta ölümlerine sebep olabilmişlerdir. Kimsesiz çocukları sahiplenen devlet onlara maaşlı sütnine ya da sütanne temin etmiştir. Kolcu kadınlar, hamam ustaları vasıtasıyla bulunabilen sütanne ve sütnineler 19. yüzyılın sonlarında “Hizmetkâran kethüdalığı” ile de temin edilebilmiştir. Söz konusu yüzyıl aslında bebek beslenmesinde önemli bir yol katedildiği hayvan sütü ve pek çok gıdanın biberonlar ile bebeğe verilebildiği bir dönemdir. Özellikle 19. yüzyılın sonları 20. yüzyıl başları sütnine ve sütanne temin etmenin de güç olduğu bir dönemdir. Bu açıdan anne sütünün hâlâ önemsenmesi ve sütninelik ya da sütanneliğin gündemde tutulması dikkate değerdir.

Abstract

In this study the tradition of wet nursing and experienced wet nursing that had a very important role in Ottoman child care and nutrition was discussed which was widely continued in the second half of the 19th century. Experienced wet nurses who were paid to give milk to the baby were old hand women who raised two or three children. Women who were generally poor and in need prefered to become wet nursing and experienced wet nursing. In this case, they had often risked their own children, causing them to become ill or even die. The state that protected abandoned children by providing them salaried wet nurse or experienced wet nurse. Wet nurses and experienced wet nurses who could be found through female guards and hammam employee also were being provided by “Hizmetkâran kethüdalığı” at the end of the 19th century.In this century, an important distance had been covered in baby feeding; animal milk and many food could be given to the baby with feeding bottles. Especially in the late19th century in the beginning of the 20th century, it was difficult to find wet nurses and experinenced wet nurses. In this respect, it is noteworthy that breastmilk was still considered importance and wet nursery or experienced wet nursery was on the agenda.
