Abstract
While the European Enlightenment and the top of this movement French Revolution presented multiple and strong transformations to the whole World, they provided a basis as well for the Ottoman Greeks and the other Greek communities in the World to gather around a common identity, by making a way for a cultural spring in the Greek World. As a result of this, the independent Greek state arose and the new state used several instruments particularly education for gathering the Ottoman Greeks of Istanbul and Anatolia under the Hellen identity. Also the process of modernization in the Ottoman Empire both brought a new perspective to social organising of the Ottoman Greeks and prepared the required background involuntarily for the establishment of the common identity among them. One of the most significant instruments of the national consciousness project of Greece for making the Ottoman Greeks gain their ethnical belonging was the associations which tended to supply the needs of the Ottoman Greek community in almost every fields that official authorities remained incapable. The associations which provided and strengthened the connection between communities by means of social solidarity, also played a role in creating and maintaining a common culture by making the members of the community as the part of the common network. The association movement that emerged before the Tanzimat Period in the Ottoman Empire, speeded up from the last half of the 19th century. İzmir, as a significant centre of commerce and which established strong relations with West, impressed from the Greek Enlightenment and thus pioneered this association movement with the Greeks of İzmir as well. The Greeks of İzmir who established associations by reorganising in the fields of education and culture mediated the national consciousness project of the Ottoman Greeks, in other words spreading Hellenism ideology all around the Ottoman country. In this study which depends mainly on Greek documents and resources, the rise and development of the association movement in the Ottoman Empire was discussed by focusing on the Ottoman Greek community and the Greek associational activities were exemplified by the Ottoman Greek associations of İzmir.
