Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate on a relational basis the success levels of students in Turkish course and other courses. Data have been collected in accordance with quantitative research and relational descriptive model has been chosen. Study group consists of 147 students who were enrolled five different branches of 5th grade at Sehit Ertuğrul Elementary School. Data source is the reports of students and the course passing grades in their reports. Descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression analysis were employed for data analysis. According to the research findings, significant relation has been detected between Turkish course and all other courses. The correlation of Turkish with mathematics, social sciences, natural sciences, English and music courses turned out high (r=0.77 and above). The relation between drawing-handwork, religion, physical education and Turkish courses is also significant, but at a lower level. Mathematics, music, social sciences and English courses were effective in regression of Turkish language lesson; on the other hand, natural science, drawing-handwork, physical education and religion courses were not effective. According to regression and correlation findings, the course which is most related to Turkish is mathematics. Courses are separated as numeric and verbal according to the traditional understanding of education. This finding provoked the thought that mentioned separation should be discussed. In addition, awareness has been created for eliminating the separation between disciplines and establishing connections among courses at elementary school level.
