Undergraduate tourism students’ work values: The case of Çeşme School Tourism and Hospitality

Özet

Turizm eğitimi alan öğrencilerin iş değerlerinin belirlenmesi ve eğitim aldıkları bölüme göre iş değerlerindeki farklılık bu çalışmanın temel amaçlarını oluşturmaktadır. İş değerlerinin meslek seçiminde etkisi ve işgörenin iş değerlerine uygun mesleği yapmasının iş doyumundaki önemi ve turizm sektöründeki yüksek işgören devri bu çalışmaya yönlendirmiştir. Veriler yapılandırılmış anket tekniği ile turizm eğitimi alan 435 lisans öğrencisinden toplanmıştır. Bulgulara göre, turizm öğrencileri için, insan ilişkileri, iş özellikleri, iş ortamı, yenilikçilik ve liderlik özelliklerinin önemli olduğu belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin iş değerinde, eğitim aldıkları bölüme, cinsiyete ve yaşa göre farklılık olduğu görülmüştür.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify tourism students’ work values and differences according to departments. The influence of work values on the career choice and the importance of the compatible job with work values in job satisfaction and the high turnover in tourism industry are the causes of this study. Accordingly, a structured questionnaire was conducted to gather data from senior hospitality students. The findings indicate that human relations, work characteristics, work environment, innovation, and leadership are important features in terms of tourism students. The results reveal that significant differences exist according to departments, genders and ages in tourism students’ work value.
