Abstract
Background and Aims: The aims of this article were to examine the reliability of regression equations suggested for Turkish population and develop new equations to increase the predictive accuracy. Materials and Methods: Crown widths were measured on dental casts of 198 patients. Correlation coefficients were determined to evaluate the two prediction methods suggested for Turkish population. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine which sum of permanent tooth widths has the best predictive ability. New regression equations were calculated Results: There were statistically significant differences between genders and arches ( P < .05) in the widths of teeth. Sum of permanent upper first molar, lower central and lateral incisors had the highest correlation. The linear regression equations were determined to be: Y= 5.243 0.249(X0) + 0.386(X1) for the maxilla, and Y= 5.008 0.227(X0) + 0.378(X1) for the mandible, where Y was the sum of the unerupted permanent canine and premolar widths, X0 indicates gender, and X1 was the sum of permanent upper first molar, lower central and lateral incisors. Conclusion: The new regression equations developed in this study can be used for an accurate mixed dentition analysis in the orthodontic treatment planning of Turkish children.
