Abstract
This article traces the decline of public confidence in media institutions in the 1990s. Data from public opinion surveys indicate a clear downward trend in public trust in the media. Both the press and the television seem to have lost much of their credibility in the eyes of the general public and are now among the least trusted institutions in Turkish society. It is widely assumed that the lower standards and -if one may coin such a word- the "tabloidization" of the majority of the Turkish media are responsible for this trend. Although this is a charming hypothesis, its veracity is at best doubtful given the fact that the public seems to have an insatiable demand for gossip, sex, violence, reality shows, soap operas, and the like. Further research and data are needed to explain this contradiction of demanding more of that which erodes confidence.
