Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigatewhether the dispositional flow state of regularexercise participants were predicted by perceivedappearance and self-esteem. The study samplecomprised of 142 men (Mage = 24.25, SD = 6.50) and153 women (Mage = 27.33, SD = 8.23) exercise participantsexercising regularly more than six monthsat different sport centers. Demographic informationform, perceived appearance sub dimension of PhysicalSelf-Description Questionnaire, Rosenberg SelfesteemScale, and Dispositional Flow Scale were usedto collect the data. To examine the role of perceivedappearance and self-esteem in the prediction of dispositionalflow of regular exercise participants, a hierarchicalregression analysis was conducted. At Step1 of the regression analysis, perceived appearancewas considered as a significant contributor for explaining23 % variance of participants’ dispositional flow(p < .01). At Step 2 of the regression analysis, self-esteem was considered as a significant contributor forexplaining 20 % variance of participants’ dispositionalflow (p < .01). Results indicated that perceived appearanceand self-esteem predicted total 43 % variance ofexercise participants’ dispositional flow in the currentstudy. Findings of the study supported the assertionthat perceived appearance and self-esteem play significantrole in predicting flow experiences of regularexercise participants.
