Abstract

In the book named “Türkiye Bitkileri Listesi (Damarlı Bitkiler)” the genus Lappula from the family Boraginaceae (Hodangiller) and its species L. barbata grown in Turkey were given the name "Gürke" as scientific name in Turkish. The names of the the other six Lappula species were derived from the word “Gürke”. In fact, “Gürke” is the name of the author who made combinations of L. barbata, L. microcarpa, L. patula and L. sessiliflora, and it was probably not used deliberately as a plant name. Therefore, it is not the vernacular name of the plant used by the local people. In the field and literature studies, it has been determined that L. barbata plant is called “Dikenli çiğit” or “Çiğit otu” as Turkish name. Therefore, in accordance with The Guideline For Turkish Scientific Plant Names, “Dikenli çiğit” is proposed for the genus Lappula and L. barbata, and new names derived from “Çiğit otu” for its other species distributed in Turkey.
