Abstract
İzmir, having been an important port city for centuries, has encountered even more health problems as its trade volume and population increased. The city, which has been frequently visited by foreigners, has been exposed to many epidemics and infectious diseases carried by them. This has necessitated the construction of health institutions to fight against diseases. In this cosmopolitan city, institutions that undertake health services were first built by non-Muslims. The Turks, however, had attempted to open their own hospitals in the 19th century. Whether belonging to Turks or non-Muslims, all hospitals in the city have welcomed all nationals, primarily their own citizens. Unfortunately, many of the hospitals could not reach the Republic Period since they were damaged by the Great Fire in 1922 and had to end their activities.
