Abstract

This research was carried out to determine the effect of various levels applied with subsurface drip system in the Cukurova Region on bell pepper yield and water use efficiency during 2016-2017 at the Tarsus Soil and Water Resources Research Location. In the study, five irrigation programs (Full irrigation, FI; conventional deficit irrigation, DI-50 and DI-75; Partial Root-Zone Drying, PRD-50 of full irrigation treatments and Regulated Deficit Irrigation) were tested. The experiment was designed as randomized blocks with four replications. The effects of the irrigation levels on the yield were found statistically significant. Full irrigation treatment (FI) produced the highest yield (74.2 and 71.5 t ha-1), the lowest yield was obtained in PRD-50 treatment plots (54.1 and 46.4 t ha-1). The highest water use efficiency (WUE) was found in deficit irrigation DI-75 (12.7 and 10.7 kg m-3). Full irrigation treatment should be irrigated when 25% of available water in the 60 cm root-zone depth was depleted, and replenished to field capacity. However, under water scarcity conditions, RDI and DI-75 irrigation regimes saving water as compared with full irrigation, and results in slight yield decrease, could be a good alternative to full irrigation for bell pepper.
