Abstract

This article is the product of a comparative study of two Qur’anic dictionaries. The first one isthe work of Raghib al-Isfahani titled al-Mufradat. The other is the work titled Umdah al-huffaz bySamîn al-Halabî who lived after more than two centuries later from Raghib. Samîn wrote Umdahal-huffaz in order to complete the deficiencies in al-Mufradat and similar works on gharib al-Qur’an. The author criticized many linguists in his work. Undoubtedly, the most-exposed to hiscriticism in Umdah al-huffaz is Raghib. The aim is not to try to make one of the authors right, theother unjust. On the contrary, this article examines the criticisms of Samîn in terms of gharib al-Qur’an.
