Abstract

Hope and hopelessness are concepts that are coexistant with humankind throughout the time. Personal interpretations of these concepts and the ways of personally experiencing them constantly drive an individual into an existential anxiety. Thus a solution to the existential crisis that an individual is lead into by these two concepts is attempted to be suggested in this study through an existential approach. In this study, the two basic concepts of the existentialist teaching which are hope and hopelessness are discussed based on the novel Il Deserto dei Tartari by Buzzatti and a suggestion to eliminate the contradiction between these concepts or, to be exact, a possibility to make a preference between the two aforementioned concepts is attempted to be put forth based on the ideas of Kierkegaard.
