Can Buildings with Brick Facade be one of the Elements Determining The Identity of a City?: The Case of Eskişehir

Özet

Pişmiş toprak yapım malzemeleri üretim imkânlarının Eskişehir’de gelişmiş olması, Eskişehir kent kimliğinin oluşturulmasında önemli bir tasarım verisidir. Bu tasarım verisini günümüzde geniş çaplı olarak kullanan ve sürdürülebilir bir kent kimliği oluşmasını sağlayan itici güç ise, Anadolu Üniversitesi’nin kampüs binalarındaki söz konusu uygulamalardır. Bu uygulamaların getirdiği dinamik etki, yine kentin doğal kaynaklarından elde edilen yerel malzemelerle çağdaş bir yapılanmayı birleştirerek, kent kimliğinin oluşumunu, oluşan bu kimliğin de sürdürülebilir bir yapıya kavuşmasını olanaklı kılmış ve “tuğla malzeme”, doku ve rengi ile kent kimliğini belirleyici öğelerden birisi olmuştur.

Abstract

The condition that the production facilities of the terra-cotta building materials are developed in Eskisehir, is a significant design data for developing the city identity of Eskisehir. The driving force, which uses this design data in a wider sense and enables the formation a sustainable city identity, on the other hand, is the aforementioned implementations in the campus buildings of Anadolu University. The dynamic effect brought forth by these implementations enabled the formation of the city identity and the sustainable structure of this city identity by integrating the local materials, again obtained from the natural resources of the city, with a contemporary structuring; and the “brick material” became an element that “defines the city” and “describes the city” with its pattern and color.
