Abstract
This study aims to identify students’ views regarding how effective Cooperative learning is for teaching plantal tissues in biology. Instead of memorizing, cooperative learning enables students to be more active and develops their reserachskillsbyactively involving in learning new concepts. The study is a qualitative study and its population consists of 35 eleventh grade high school students in the Bahcelievlerneighborhood of Istanbul in the academicyear of 2010-2011. As part of the study, cooperative learning were utilized in teaching plantal tissues for a duration of six weeks. At the end of six-weekperiod, four open-ended structured interview questions were distributed in order to reveal students’ views on cooperative learning. The interview form given to students was prepared in consideration of expert opinion. In order to ensure objectivity of the data, students were told that their responses would not affect their course grades at all. The dataemanating from this interview form were analyzed in conformity with content analysisprocedures to producecategorical and frequencydistribution with directquotations in order to ensure validity of the data. Furthermore, directquotations were interpreted to get a betterunderstanding of students’ responses. While this content analysisreveals that Cooperative learning enhances students’ socialization, increases students’ positive attitudes toward Cooperative learning and contributes their overall progress to learning new concepts more effectivelythan traditional methods, some students express their concerns, because they feel they went to biology classwithout any prepation for plantal tissues
