Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the vegetation geography of Hassa district. Hassa is in the Mediterranean flora region. EuMediterranan belt, Sub-Mediterranean mountain belt and grassland formation as three main divisions were investigated in the study. EuMediterranan belt consists of Pinus brutia (red pine), shrub and garriques while Sub-Mediterranean mountain belt consists of Quercus, , Abies, Fugus. Cedrus and Pinus pinea. Grassland formation falls into two categories: step and alpine. The flora of Hassa includes the species of Europe-Siberia, Mediterranean and Iran-Turan floras. The species from the flora of Europe-Siberia are mostly distributed on the westward sides of Amanos Mountains while the species from the flora of Iran-Turan flora are on the eastward sides of the mountains. The species from the Mediterranean flora are more widespread and have an overall distribution. The coexistence of these different floras is a result of natural environment properties of Hassa. Hassa has a rich flora in terms of its plant diversity. However, there are some threatening problems for the flora of the region. Uncontrolled collecting some species, applying uniform stand in forests, converting forests to farmlands, felling trees, forest fires and early or over grazing. For a sustainable ecosystem, these activities should be reduced and plant species should be protected for using as eco-tourism.
