Abstract

Bone tissue loss resulting from trauma, accidents, or oncological resections necessitates the development of advanced bone graft substitutes for effective tissue replacement. In addition to fundamental requirements such as biocompatibility and the ability to promote osteogenesis, the incorporation of anticarcinogenic functionality capable of suppressing residual microscopic tumor cells within the resection site would provide a substantial therapeutic advantage, particularly in post-tumor reconstruction. Aronia melanocarpa is a rich source of bioactive phytochemicals and has been widely recognized for its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities. In this study, for the first time, Aronia extract was incorporated into the fabrication of collagen–hydroxyapatite (Col/HA)-based composite bone grafts, introducing a novel multifunctional biomaterial platform. The grafts were fabricated via a lyophilization technique and cross-linked with genipin. Their morphological, physicochemical, and structural properties were comprehensively characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and swelling analyses. Furthermore, cytocompatibility was confirmed by MTT assays using L929 fibroblast cells, demonstrating the non-cytotoxic nature of the developed grafts.
