Abstract
Jerusalem with its rich historical and religious background dating back to nearly five thousand years, is holy to the three monotheistic religions. In Islam, it has been established as the first Qiblah (direction of prayers), the site of the nocturnal Journey and the gateway to the ascension to heaven, amongst many other reasons. Muslim societies inspired by its importance have attributed a special position to this holy city. Thus, becoming the subject of major literary genres in Classic Turkish Literature as well as Modern Literature. The theme of Jerusalem has existed in the discourse of Classic Turkish Literature such as sayāhatnāma or "books of travels", miʿrājiya or "poetry on the Night Journey and Ascension" and fetihnâme or "narratives of conquests”. Moreover, ʿAllāma Shaykhi has dedicated to the theme of Jerusalem a qasidah (purpose poem or ode) in his Diwan as well as two gazel (courtly lyrics) where he uses "Quds" as a repeated word (redîf) in his poems. However, judging from existing classical works, it is possible to argue that the theme of Jerusalem is not dealt with much in Classical Turkish Literature. In contrast, in Modern Turkish Literature the theme of Jerusalem is frequently dealt with by Sezai Karakoç and some successive poets post-1950s. It is possible to argue that while Classic Turkish Literature emphasised on Jerusalem’s virtues, beauty and holiness, Modern Turkish Literature expressed an Islamic perception and rhetoric within the framework of the Cause of Palestine.
