Abstract
Kaposvár is located 186 kilometres southwest of Budapest. The city is situated on both sides of the Kapos River. ‘Kapu’ means gate, while ‘var’ means castle or city. Kaposvár Castle is one of the structures that has received limited attention in research literature compared to many other border castles in Central Europe. According to existing historical sources, the castle’s history can be traced back to at least 1387, and it appears to have changed hands between different aristocratic families until the mid-16th century. The city was incorporated into Ottoman territory in 1554 by Budin Beylerbeyi Toygun Pasha. It remained under Ottoman rule until it was captured by Austrian forces in 1686. Kaposvár Castle was built on flat land with a square floor plan. The castle was probably originally designed to be surrounded by a fence wall, with a moat and ramparts around it. In 16th and 17th century engravings, four towers can be seen at the corners. Evliya Çelebi›s Travelogue, written during his visit to Hungary between 1663 and 1664, mentions the Ottoman structures at Kaposvár Castle. It is known that the Hünkâr mosque, madrasa, tekke, hanikah, hamam, and han were located within the inner and outer castles. However, as no structures or remains from the Ottoman period have survived to the present day, it is not known how accurate the depictions in the engravings are. A factory was built on the site of the castle. Today, only a few walls of the castle remain. After the factory was demolished, work on the castle began relatively recently. Excavations initiated by the Rippl Ronai Museum in 2019 have yielded important data about the castle’s history. During these archaeological excavations, many artefacts from the Ottoman period were discovered. The article focuses specifically on Kaposvár Castle’s history during the Ottoman period. The article provides a detailed examination of the single-colour glazed pots, sgraffito-decorated pottery, unglazed everyday ware and stove tiles discovered during the excavation. In addition, the excavations at Kaposvár Castle provide significant data regarding metalworking. Artifacts such as bracelets, rings, palmette-shaped alem, palm guards and metal decorative plates from horse harnesses have been evaluated from a typological and functional perspective. The artefacts examined in the study were compared with contemporary excavation data from the surrounding region, as well as with similar examples in museum collections, in terms of their form, material, and decorative features. The artefacts unearthed here are similar to those found in other Ottoman castles in regions conquered by the Ottomans between the 16th and 18th centuries. The artefacts discovered in Kaposvár confirm the typological diversity of Ottoman material culture in Hungary, supporting the theory of a prevalent Balkan influence in the region. These finds from the Ottoman period, which were discovered at Kaposvár Castle, seem rather modest when compared to the more magnificent artefacts of the Ottoman Empire. However, these artefacts are of considerable importance in terms of their reflection of material culture. In conclusion, the findings of the archaeological investigations at Kaposvár Castle play a significant role in the assessment of Turkish artefacts in Hungary.
