Abstract

Following the Zionist occupation, the residents of Jerusalem lived in difficult circumstances, whereby the Zionist enemy, represented by its government, army and institutions, carried out a number of actions in the process of changing the demographic structure and cultural eradication of the Holy City. This was done with the intention of converting the city into a purely Jewish area. However, the residents of the Holy City did not surrender to this new reality which was imposed by the occupation forces, but have responded by various means, and they have fiercely resisted the practices of the Zionists. They stood in the face of the occupation in defence of their Holy City (Al-Quds al-Sharif) and their identity, at all levels: educational, cultural, economic, social and religious. The study examines the procedures that Jerusalemites used to preserve their national identity and affiliation with the Holy Land, and in confronting the occupying enemy that seeks to establish control over most of the Palestinian lands, especially the Holy City of Bayt al-Maqdis. They were able to do this through several measures, including rejecting the Zionist educational programs, peaceful resistance and through Palestinian institutions in the Holy City, as well as armed resistance and the mass uprising (Intifada) that has become one of the most important means of confronting the Zionist enemy, particularly after failing to achieve positive outcomes through the use of peaceful resistance.
