Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of audit firm rotation on audit fees using a sample of firms listed on Borsa Istanbul (BIST). Audit firm rotation is implemented to preserve auditor independence and improve audit quality. However, previous studies have reported mixed findings regarding its impact on audit fees. Accordingly, panel data analysis was conducted using data (684 firm-year observations) from manufacturing firms listed on BIST for the 2020–2023 period. In the model, audit fee is the dependent variable, while audit firm rotation is the main independent variable. Audit firm size (Big4/Non-Big4), audit opinion type, firm size, leverage ratio, and loss status are included as control variables. The results reveal that audit firm rotation has a statistically significant and positive effect. This indicates that auditor changes increase audit costs due to information asymmetry, higher perceived risk, and adaptation costs. Overall, the findings suggest that while audit firm rotation may raise audit costs in the short term, it contributes positively to auditor independence and audit quality in the long term.
