Abstract
Following Russia’s policies after 1828 and the migration of Armenian populations to the Karabakh region, the Azerbaijani population began to become a minority. The first large-scale Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan began in 1905, with the most recent war taking place in 2020. The technological revolution between these periods of war has brought the battlefield to social media platforms in the present day. This study aims to analyze a war by compiling a large number of user comments shared on social media during the conflict. In this context, a total of 616,297 data entries from Twitter (X) were collected between 27.09.2020 and 09.11.2020, each containing at least one of the keywords “Qarabağ” (Azerbaijani), “Karabakh” (English), or “Karabağ” (Turkish). This study employs text mining techniques to analyze the diversity and prominence of topics expressed by users on social media during the war. The findings indicate that while some users sought to emphasize Azerbaijan’s legitimacy, negative and hate-oriented discourse remained dominant, highlighting the dual role of social media in crisis communication.
