Abstract

In open economies, the relationship between real exchange rate volatility and foreign trade has a strategic importance in terms of establishing an appropriate trade policy for the economies of these countries. In addition, the importance of exchange rate volatility increases for countries which carries out most of its total trade with a single country or a region. Turkiye is one of these countries. In terms of both exports and imports, Turkiye's top trading partner is the European Union (EU) with whom Turkiye carries out approximately half of its total trade. Therefore, it is of particular importance to examine the relationship between exchange rate volatility and foreign trade by considering Turkiye's trade with the EU. Hence the aim of the study is to analyze the relationship between exchange rate volatility and Turkiye's exports to the EU. The exports of the 22-manufacturing industry sub-sectors are considered, and it is investigated whether the exchange rate volatility level has any effect on Turkiye's exports to the EU by weighting and using the second-generation panel data method. The findings of the empirical analysis indicate that exchange rate volatility does not affect every sub-sector in the same way. While exchange rate volatility has a positive effect on exports in some sectors (e.g. textile), it has a negative effect in some others (e.g. leather). Besides, for some of the sectors (e.g. basic metal) the result was statistically insignificant.
