Abstract
The seventeenth century stands out as a period in which the Ottoman State experienced profound upheavals in political, military, and social spheres; signs of weakening central authority became increasingly apparent, and the disintegration of the social structure grew more visible. The Celâlî rebellions that emerged during this century, the growing influence of local power holders in the provinces, disruptions in the tax-farming system, and the moral and political corruption observed in social and administrative life were subjects of criticism by many contemporary authors. In this context, discussions within the Ottoman intellectual and literary milieu concerning the moral and administrative condition of the state were not confined to aesthetic concerns alone; rather, the classical poetic form became a medium through which political counsel and criticism were articulated. Within this literary and historical framework, the present study focuses on the qasida with the refrain “know this”, attributed to Kadızâde Mehmed Efendi and written in address to Sultan Murad IV. In his work, Kadızâde Mehmed Efendi addresses issues such as administrative deterioration, social corruption, moral decline, and the spread of religious innovations, and expresses an expectation that Murad IV should intervene effectively against this process of disintegration. Accordingly, the study examines the content and stylistic features of the qasida through a text-centered analytical approach and seeks to demonstrate how Kadızâde Mehmed Efendi structured his social and political criticisms of seventeenth-century Ottoman society within a literary form.
