Abstract
Buldāniyyāt are a type of ḥadīth compilation in which traditionists collected narrations they obtained from different cities and regions. This genre initially emerged through the addition of geographical information to collections of forty ḥadīths and gradually developed into an independent literary form through the compilation of narrations transmitted in various cities, preferably with ʿālī isnāds (shorter and higher chains of transmission). The literature of buldāniyyāt is generally examined in three phases: the formative, developmental, and modern periods. Particularly during the developmental period, which extends from the 6th/12th to the 10th/16th century, numerous scholars composed works in this genre. Over time, the increasing number of cities included, the detailed information provided about transmitters, thematic diversity, and the emphasis on isnād contributed to the institutionalization of the buldāniyyāt tradition. Within this framework, the present study examines the work titled Kitāb al-Aḥādīth al-Buldāniyya by Ibn Ṭūlūn al-Dimashqī (d. 953/1546). Although the author refers to this work as Arbaʿīn al-Buldāniyya in his autobiographical work al-Fulk al-Mashḥūn fī Aḥwāl Muḥammad b. Ṭūlūn, the manuscript copy identified records the title as Kitāb al-Aḥādīth al-Buldāniyya. The examination of this manuscript, preserved in the Tunisian National Library (Dār al-Kutub al-Waṭaniyya), constitutes one of the main aspects of the originality and scholarly contribution of this study, as the work had previously been described in the literature as lost. In this respect, the article introduces a previously unexamined—and even presumed lost—text within the buldāniyyāt tradition and provides new data concerning one of its later examples. In the introduction to his work, Ibn Ṭūlūn presents the buldāniyya tradition in chronological order and refers to the works of prominent ḥadīth scholars such as al-Sakhāwī and Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī. Although he states that he initially intended to compile forty ḥadīths, he explains that he was unable to undertake scholarly journeys (riḥla) due to physical limitations and therefore restricted the collection to thirty narrations. In this respect, the work resembles al-Dhahabī’s al-Arbaʿūn al-Buldāniyya and al-Salāsūn al-Buldāniyya, which also contain fewer than forty narrations. The ḥadīths are arranged according to the Companion transmitters, and the work begins with Mecca and concludes with Medina. The author’s deliberate structuring of each narration so that the teacher from whom the report was received, the city, the Companion transmitter, and the text of the ḥadīth differ from one another reflects the characteristic features of the developmental phase of the buldāniyya literature. An examination of the geographical distribution of the narrations shows that a significant portion of the ḥadīths were transmitted from scholarly centers in and around Damascus. In particular, the Ghūṭa region, Wādī Baradā, and the settlements surrounding Mount Qāsiyūn emerge as important centers of transmission. This indicates that Ibn Ṭūlūn’s scholarly activity largely developed within the Syrian region and that his network of ḥadīth transmission was primarily rooted in this geographical area. At the same time, it reflects the continuity of the ḥadīth tradition that had formed in Syria since the early Islamic period through the settlement of prominent Companions such as Muʿādh b. Jabal, Abū al-Dardāʾ, Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī, ʿUbāda b. al-Ṣāmit, and Abū Hurayra. In this respect, the work occupies a distinctive place within the buldāniyyāt literature by demonstrating the continuity of the Damascus-centered ḥadīth tradition. An analysis of the narrations further reveals that they are closely connected with the classical ḥadīth corpus: approximately % 87 of them appear directly or indirectly in the canonical collections known as the Kutub al-Sitta. The majority of the narrations are evaluated as ṣaḥīḥ or ḥasan. Moreover, Ibn Ṭūlūn’s attention in some cases to elevated chains of transmission (ʿālī isnād) and to isnād transformations demonstrates the importance he attributed to the value of the transmission chains. From a thematic perspective, the work is not merely a geographical compilation of ḥadīths; it also encompasses a wide range of subjects, including ethics, acts of worship, scholarly activity, and social relations. In conclusion, Kitāb al-Aḥādīth al-Buldāniyya can be regarded as an important work within the buldāniyyāt tradition, as it combines elements such as geographical attribution, awareness of sources, evaluation of authenticity, and thematic diversity, thereby reflecting the scholarly and historical background of the Damascus-centered ḥadīth tradition in a systematic manner.
