Abstract

Dengbêjs are among the most important representatives of Kurdish verbal art, with their unique sound and performance styles, their ability to record and transmit past events as oral historians, and their wide repertoire diversifying around themes such as heroism and love. The kilams, improvised or orally transmitted poetic narratives across generations, are typically performed without instruments and play an important role in transferring social memory. In this article, two Kurdish kilams, namely ‘Geliyê Zîlan’ performed and recorded on the cassette by Dengbêj Reso (1902-1983), and ‘Keremê Elî’ which is on the same topic performed by Dengbêj Nuroyê Meter (1941-2020) are investigated in the context of the power of place names to evoke the memory of traumatic past. It was argued that oral narratives employed spatial representations to preserve the memory while creating an effective narrative resistance towards the act of forgetting. As a result, it turned out that the kilams evolved from a pure poetic narrative into a counter-historical narrative against official state discourse. This study touches on the importance of place names in the Kurdish oral narratives, which are frequently included in the kilams performed by dengbêjs, and points out that the place names in the kilams turn into a kind of verbal monument related to memory and examine social power toponyms to evoke the past, within the framework of Nora's concept, ‘realms of memory’ [lieux de mémoire]. On this basis, Kurdish oral tradition serves to encode social, cultural and historical meaning on the space and place names create and act as the place of memory in the kilams. In addition, while our research benefits from recent oral history studies about Zilan to contribute to the content analysis of the aforementioned kilams, it also refers to the popular practice of commemorative place naming related to places of memory. Keywords: Dengbêj, kilam, memory, lieux de mémoire, Zilan Valley.
