Annelerin %43.9’u, babaların %56.8’i ilköğretim mezunudur.
Abstract
Aim: This study aims to identify the educational needs for child care of the parents of the children with leukemia and to evaluate the effectiveness of this training program. Method: Target population was 105 parents of the children with leukemia consulting to Çukurova University Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Policlinic between September 1st, 2010 and March 1st, 2011. The participants were 45 mothers or fathers of children who were diagnosed with leukemia within two months at most. The data were collected through the questionnaires prepared by the researchers based on the the relavent literature: Descriptive Features of Parent and Children Questionnaire, Educational Needs Of The Parents For Child Care Questionnaire, and the Questionnaire aiming to identify the parents’ views regarding the training planned to be given. Three weeks after the application of the survey, the parents were trained about leukemia and the training booklets were given. The training booklet included information on such topics as leukemia disease, its treatment, side effects of the treatment, and the ways of preventing the side effects. The same questionnaire was administered as post-test three weeks after the training. The effectiveness of the training was evaluated using SPSS 11.5 and MedCalc®v11.0.1 package programming. Results: Among all the parents participated into this study, 71.1% were mothers. 56.8% fathers and 43.9% of the mothers were primary school graduates. In this study, mean cumulative grade of the parents for leukemia knowledge evaluation with pre-training test was found to be 58.4 whereas the mean grade increased to 136.76 with the post-training test. The difference between the mean grades of the parents given pre- and post-training tests were found to be statistically significant (p
