Özet

Mescitler, İslâm toplumunda tarih boyunca Müslümanların ibadet mekânı olarak kutsiyetini korumuştur. Özellikle üç büyük mescidin –Mescid-i Harâm, Mescid-i Nebevî ve Mescid-i Aksâ– üstünlüğüne dair Kur’ân’da yer alan ayetler ve Hz. Peygamber’in hadisleri, bu kutsiyetin temel referanslarını oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmamızın merkezinde bulunan “Şedd-i rihâl hadisi”nde Hz.

Abstract

Mosques have preserved their sanctity throughout Islamic history as places of worship for Muslims. In particular, the Qur’ānic verses and the Prophetic traditions concerning the three great mosques—al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, al-Masjid al-Nabawī, and al-Masjid al-Aqṣā—form the primary references for this sanctity. At the center of our study lies the Ḥadīth of Shadd al-Riḥāl, in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that purposeful travel (for the sake of worship) is to be undertaken only to these three mosques. However, from the perspective of the relationship between wording and meaning, certain linguistic features of Arabic grammar render this ḥadīth susceptible to superficial misinterpretation. For this reason, Muslim scholars throughout history have endeavored to prevent potential misunderstandings of the narration. On the other hand, some Orientalists, driven by political motives, have regarded this narration as spurious (mawḍūʿ). In doing so, they sought both to undermine the historical value of the ḥadīth and to diminish the sanctity of Jerusalem in the eyes of Muslims. This article examines the Ḥadīth of Shadd al-Riḥāl in terms of its chain of transmission (isnād) and textual content (matn), assessing its authenticity while analyzing its meaning and impact within the Islamic sciences. Furthermore, the study will address the virtues of the three designated mosques, the legal ruling on journeys undertaken to other places of worship, and the approaches of various schools of law on this matter. Thus, the article aims to contribute objectively to contemporary debates in light of the religious, scholarly, and historical framework established by this ḥadīth.
