Abstract
The vast majority of Islamic scholars have stated that the Quran in miraculous in its verse. Bediüzzaman Said Nursi, a late Islamic scholar, also acknowledged the miraculous nature of the Quran through its verse and wrote various works on this subject. He also discovered that a characteristic of its wording also pointed to its miraculous nature. Accordingly, some word from the same root in the Quran, particularly the words “Allah” and “Rabb”, appear one below the other on the same pace, one above the other on opposite pages, or back on the front and back of the same page. Nursi noted these coindicendes in a mushaf written in the Hafiz Osman script and requested that the Quran be written in this manner. Although he made several attempts to have this mushaf, known as “the Quran with congruity (tawafuq),” printed by the Presidency of Religious Affairs, he was unsuccessful in this endeavor until his death. This Mushaf was later by the great calligrapher Hamid Aytaç and published numerous times in Turkey and Germany starting in 1974. The Quran with congruity, written in the official Osman style (resm-i Othmani) by calligrapher Refet Kavukçu, was published by Cāmiʻ Al-Azhar in Egypt. According to Nursi, the Quran with congruity is a visual miracle of the Quran, a significant sign and indication of its miraculous for those who believe only in what they see. This article examines all of Nursi’s works, by applying the method of textual analysis, explores the issue of the Quran with congruity in its various dimensions.
