Abstract

Social movements are defined as the collective actions of people who come together around a common goal. Classical social movements, which emerged in the 19th century as a reaction to social inequalities, gave way to new social movements defined around identity and culture in the 1960s. This study examines the historical process of women's movements, a type of social movement, within the context of the relevant literature. Due to the limitations of the study, women's movements and the transformations they have undergone have been examined within the framework of classical and new social movements. In this context, the aim of the study is to examine the changes experienced in women's movements and the factors that caused these changes. Women's movements can be divided into four waves based on the changes they have undergone. According to the findings of the study, each wave encompasses the elements of the previous wave, but also incorporates new discourses and demands influenced by the social and political context of the period. While the first wave is considered within classical social movements, the second, third, and fourth waves are considered within new social movements. The study analyzes the transformations experienced by women's movements from their earliest emergence to the present day, specifically examining the rights demanded, forms of action, and issues emphasized. The study concluded that women's movements, which developed within the framework of social movements, were affected by the transformations undergone by social movements. Accordingly, women's movements also underwent transformation under the influence of global circumstances such as demands for independence, the capitalist mode of production, globalization, and digitalization.
