Abstract

This study aims to examine, from a multidimensional perspective, the legitimacy crisis faced by Darülfünûn—the most significant legacy of Ottoman modernization in higher education — the Republic’s nation-building process, the criticisms it endured, and the liquidation process that culminated in the 1933 University Reform. Adopting historical and descriptive analysis methods, the study examines the political actors of the period, the ideological criticisms of the Kadro magazine circle, the debates at the First Turkish History Congress of 1932, and the report of Prof. Albert Malche. The study concludes that the university's failure to provide the expected academic and ideological support to the Republican reforms, particularly the Turkish History Thesis and statist policies, was the reason for its closure. In particular, scientific challenges to the official historical narrative marked a turning point. Furthermore, the targeting of liberal-minded professors such as Ahmet Ağaoğlu, who were affiliated with the Free Republican Party, reveals that the process was not only scientific but also carried a dimension of political reckoning. The study emphasizes that the structural and methodological shortcomings identified in the report prepared by the Swiss expert Albert Malche were used by the government as a scientific justification for a radical purge of personnel. The study is significant because it reveals the 1933 Reform was not merely an attempt to improve academic quality, but rather a political restructuring project that involved the large-scale purge of the old staff and the establishment of Istanbul University with a national and revolutionary identity loyal to the ideological principles of the regime.
