Abstract
In Christian theology, the claim that Jesus of Nazareth is the ‘Messiah from the line of David’ whom the Jewish community had been awaiting for centuries is of central importance. In order to establish this claim on a legitimate basis and to document that Jesus was the expected Messiah, Matthew and Luke provide genealogical lists at the beginning of their Gospels; however, the lists presented by the Gospel writers differ in terms of their starting points, scope and the figures included. The most striking difference between the genealogies lies in Matthew’s inclusion of four women in his list. According to Jewish genealogical tradition, lineage is traced through the father, so women are typically excluded from such lists. Moreover, Matthew chooses to mention names such as Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba—who are associated with foreign origins, scandals and moral controversies—rather than holy mothers like Sarah, Rebekah and Rachel, who are regarded as symbols of virtue, patience and chastity in Jewish tradition. Regarding the inclusion of these women in the genealogical list within the scope of this study; theories will be analysed suggesting that Jesus had sinful ancestors in order to save sinners; that these women were courageous and enterprising individuals who fulfilled God’s plan; that they were foreigners pointing to the universality of Jesus’ message; and that they were included in the list as a defence against the Jews’ claims of Mary’s illegitimate birth. The aim of the research is to demonstrate that the presence of these women is not merely a historical genealogical record, but also a conscious choice regarding the identity of the Messiah and the universal mission of the Church.
