Abstract

Al-Fārābī, who articulates the relationship between reason and revelation through a typological classification of the philosopher, the prophet, and the first ruler (al-raʼīs al-awwal), defines his conception of political authority within the framework of this triadic structure. In this context, the primary aim of this study is to explicate the tripartite typology of the philosopher, the prophet, and the first ruler in al-Fārābī’s political philosophy on epistemological grounds; to compare their modes of acquiring and transmitting knowledge through the operations of the acquired intellect and the imaginative faculty; and finally, to demonstrate how these two faculties are synthesized in the figure of the first ruler. The study first clarifies the epistemological dimensions of the acquired intellect and the imaginative faculty. Subsequently, the distinctive competencies of the philosopher, the prophet, and the first ruler are compared, and the interrelations among these types are examined. According to al-Fārābī, the acquired intellect corresponds to the highest level of the human soul and represents theoretical certainty attained through demonstrative knowledge. On the other hand, the imaginative faculty -which reaches its most perfected state particularly in prophets- functions to convey the truth symbolically through representational language. Within this framework, the philosopher comprehends the truth through the rational-demonstrative method. In contrast, the prophet conveys the same truth to the broader community through the symbolic language of the imaginative faculty. The first ruler is defined as a synthesis model that simultaneously embodies both of these perfections. The analysis developed throughout the study reveals al-Fārābī’s original approach to synthesizing reason and revelation. It offers a framework within Islamic political thought for re-establishing the relationship between philosophy and religion on the levels of intellect and representation. In doing so, it elucidates the approach’s conceptual foundations that position the ideal ruler as a philosopher-prophet. It ultimately emphasizes that philosophical and religious truths are harmonized –rather than opposed– in the ideal of virtuous leadership.
