Abstract
Physics is the natural dwelling of human beings. By nature, the human seeks to understand and explain what occurs within this natural home, together with its causes. This search naturally leads to the accumulation of knowledge. However, the initial accumulation of knowledge is marked by diversity and disorder; it is neither systematic nor coherent. Therefore, in order to purge this body of knowledge from confusion, to facilitate education and teaching, and to render it orderly and systematic, it must be classified according to certain criteria. Within this framework, Aristotle classifies the body of knowledge along both epistemological and ontological scales. The classification made on ontological grounds—especially according to subjects—reveals the hierarchical order among the sciences and the degrees of being. The classification made on epistemological grounds, on the other hand, indicates the differences between the subjects, problems, and methods of inquiry of various sciences. In Aristotle’s taxonomy, physics belongs, together with metaphysics and mathematics, to the domain of the theoretical sciences. In Aristotle’s system, physics is an independent discipline whose subject is the motion and rest of beings composed of the four natural elements—air, water, earth, and fire; whose main concern is the explanation of being through the four causes; and whose method is grounded on sense perception and rational inference. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to examine the place, subject, and fundamental problems of physics within Aristotle’s classification, as well as to explore the content and structure of his conception of physics. One of the results obtained in this study is that physics plays a foundational role in the grounding of the subjects and problems of metaphysics and mathematics. Another conclusion is that Aristotle’s conception of physics is not composed of physics alone, but rather takes shape within a closed cosmological system, in close relation with mathematics, especially celestial physics, and metaphysics, under the guidance of logical principles. In this sense, Aristotle’s theory of physics can be regarded as the outcome of a methodological process and a logical necessity determined by the unity of ontology and epistemology.
