Abstract

What form does space, one of the pivotal themes of philosophy, take in phenomenology? This article seeks to answer this question by examining the approaches to space in the works of two significant figures in phenomenology, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty. To this end it also brings into focus concepts such as the life-world, human, everydayness, and body. This is because, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, space gains meaning through the intertwining of these concepts, albeit with different intensities, in the context of experience. With this attained meaning, in Heidegger, space appears as a determination where the world constructed by humans fundamentally spatializes; thus, space is comprised of the experiential spaces of this world. In Merleau-Ponty, on the other hand, space takes on a layered conception activated by the living body, acknowledging the unity in experience. The activity of the body here corresponds more to a perceptual/sensory activity rather than Heideggerian concrete spatialization. In this study aims to demonstrate that these two approaches to space encompass different explanatory potentials. As a result, space can be interpreted as the obscuring of the body in Heidegger and making it evident in the act of building, and in Merleau-Ponty as the fastening of the human being to the world in an experience that cannot be thought without the body.
