Abstract
Hubert Dreyfus, who has been criticizing the computational theory of mind and the philosophical tradition that gave rise to it since the early stages of the artificial intelligence debates, has emphasized the aspect of the human mind that transcends computational computers. The interesting point in Dreyfus’s works is that he uniformly treats the entire rationalist tradition, including Socrates and Plato, as computationalist or cognitivist, and claims that the intellectual foundation of the computationalist understanding he criticizes is based on Socrates and Plato’s theory of Anamnesis. In this study, Dreyfus’ criticisms of artificial intelligence will first be explained through the concepts of “body” and “situation” inspired by Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty and the Gestalt approach, which he places as the basis of the human mind or intelligent behavior. Then, it will be investigated whether or not a computationalist understanding of mind can be derived from Socrates’ dialectical method or Plato’s theory of Anamnesis. Accordingly, when the totality of dialogues and the noetic aspect of the Anamnesis theory are taken into account, it is seen that the dialectical process, which can be seen as the journey of the philo-sophos candidate accompanied by the sophos, cannot be likened to the knowledge acquisition research in which the knowledge engineer accompanies the expert, as Dreyfus mentions. Therefore, not only should sophos not be confused with the knowledge engineer and the philo-sophos with the expert, but also the trans-computational aspect of the human mind can be emphasized while remaining within the rationalist tradition.
