Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the Qur’ānic recitations and the studies of ancient Arabic dialects. The research aims to reveal the relationship between the recitations in question and the studies of ancient Arabic dialects. In this context, we attempt to answer the questions “Why did the scholars consider the Qur’ānic recitations as one of the most important and reliable sources of dialects? and what is these recitations' role in studying ancient Arabic dialects?”. In this respect, the study is both important and original. The study is based on written document analysis, one of the qualitative information collection methods. It is known that the Qur’ān was descended on seven letters, which included many ancient Arabic dialects and led to the emergence of recitations suitable for these dialects. This explains the relationship between the studies of ancient Arabic dialects and the mutawātir and shādh Qur’ānic recitations. In this context, the Qur’ān and its authentic and shādh recitations are among the most important and sound sources of the study of ancient Arabic dialects. Because the Qur’ān is under the protection of Almighty Allah; therefore it is the most reliable of available sources. In the study, the location of the Arabian Peninsula and the tribes living in that region are mentioned, important Arabic dialects that are superior to other dialects such as the Quraysh dialect are mentioned, the geographical distribution of the dialects in the Arabian Peninsula is explained, the opinions of scholars about the language in which the Qur’ān was revealed are given. The relationship between the dialects of the Qur’ānic recitations is mentioned, the formation, development, differences and types of recitations are mentioned and defined, the distinction between ṣaḥīḥ and shādh recitations, seven letters and seven recitations is tried to be revealed, and the role of the recitation method in the studies of ancient Arabic dialects is analyzed. The results obtained showed that the studies of ancient Arabic dialects were in close relationship with the mutawātir and shādh Qur’ān recitations and that Islamic scholars accepted the Qur’ānic recitations as the most important and reliable sources of the dialects.
