Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate whethersepsis, cystatin-C, pro-BNP, procalcitonin, and CRP in patientsare useful predictors of multiorgan failure and mortality. Methods: A total of 54 patients (26 men, 28 women, meanage 65.6±18.2) treated for sepsis were included in the study.Patients with chronic renal failure, hypothyroidism, hyper- thyroidism, history of diabetes, or heart failure were excludedfrom the study. Cystatin-C, pro-BNP, procalcitonin, and CRPlevels were measured in addition to routine biochemical ex- aminations. Patients who were divided into groups accordingto the etiology of sepsis (including urosepsis, pneumonia, fe- brile neutropenia, cholangitis) and outcome of the treatmentprocess (mortality and recovery) were compared. The Krus- kal-Wallis test was used to compare quantitative data andchi-square or Fisher s exact test were used for comparison ofcategorical data. A p value
