Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Vertebral hemangiomas are common benign vascular lesions. They are often asymptomatic. Pain is the most common symptom. Treatment options are: surgery, intralesional injection of alcohol, vertebroplasty with methyl methacrylate, embolisation, and radiotherapy. We present the results of radiotherapy in symptomatic vertebral hemangiomas treated in our clinic. METHODS: 34 patients (24 female, 10 male; mean age 52; range 30 to 65 years) with symptomatic vertebral hemangiomas were treated with external radiotherapy at a dose of 24-40 Gy. All patients had pain and one patient had paraplegia at presentation. Results in terms of pain and pain relief were assessed before and after therapy and during follow up. RESULTS: Radiotherapy is a non-invasive, safe, and effective treatment option for symptomatic vertebral hemangiomas, especially those cases in which pain is the main symptom. CONCLUSION: Radiotherapy is a non invasive, safe and effective treatment option for symptomatic vertebral hemangiomas especially in which pain is the main symptom.
