Abstract

Aim: Debonding of acrylic teeth from the denture base is an important problem for complete denture wearers. Bond strength between acrylic teeth and denture base resin may be improved by mechanical or chemical treatments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of various surface pretreatments of acrylic resin denture teeth on the bond strength to denture base resin. Materials and Methods: 60 acrylic first molar denture teeth were randomly divided in 6 groups; Control (no surface treatments- Group K), methyl methacrylate monomer (Group M), sandblasting with Al2O3 (Group S), Er:YAG laser irradiation (Group L), Er:YAG laser irradiation+ monomer (Group LM), sandblasting+ monomer (Group SM). Surface examinations were evaluated with scanning electron microscope (SEM). After surface examinations acrylic resin was polymerized onto the denture teeth using a specially designed mold. Specimens were tested for shear bond strength using a universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. Obtained data were analysed by using one-way ANOVA and Tamhane test (p˂0.05). Results: All surface treatment methods exhibited a significant effect on the shear bond strength of denture teeth to the denture base (p< 0.05). The highest shear bond strength was observed in Group SM (31.70 MPa). Group SM and Group LM showed higher shear bond strength values than Group S and Group L (p< 0.001). Conclusion: It can be concluded that surface pretreatments of acrylic denture teeth improve the bond strength values and ER:YAG lasers can be used as an alternative surface pretreatment method
