Abstract

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the etching time on the smear layer by using SEM. Fifteen human premolar teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons were used. One third occlusal parts of the teeth were removed by diamond bur under water cooling. A standard smear layer was created on the top surface of each tooth by using 600 grit discs for 60 seconds. The teeth were randomly and equally assigned 5 groups and dentin surfaces etched 5,10,15, 20 and 30 seconds with 35% phosphoric acid. Etched dentin surfaces were analyzed by using SEM. The results show that 5 seconds etching could not remove all smear layer on the surface but 10,15, 20 and 30 seconds acid etching time removed all of the smear layer. Fifteen seconds and more acid etching time showed deep demineralized areas.
