Abstract

Aim: To compare the thicknesses of LASIK flaps obtained with IntraLase and ZyopticXP. Material and Method: In this comparative cross-sectional study, patients who underwent LASIK for myopia and/or myopic astigmatism were enrolled. A total of 28 eyes were operated with the IntraLase femtosecond laser keratome, and 69 eyes with the Zyoptix XP mechanical microkeratome. Flap thicknesses were determined by subtraction method, using intraoperative ultrasonic pachymetry. The primary outcome measure was the obtained flap thickness with these keratomes and their relationship with the intended flap thickness. The secondary outcome measures were the correlations between the achieved flap thicknesses and preoperative spherical equivalent refraction, ultrasonic central pachymetry reading, and central corneal keratometric power. Results: When 120μm flap was intended, both keratomes created thinner than intended flaps; mean obtained flap thicknesses were 110.4±14.1 μm in the IntraLase group (p=0.002) and 115.0±15.7μm in the ZyopticXP group (p=0.01). However, there was no significant difference between the mean flap thicknesses obtained with IntraLase and ZyopticXP (p=0.19); and no correlation was observed between the deviation from intended thickness and mean spherical equivalent, pachymetry or keratometry, with both keratomes (p>0.05 for all). Conclusions: In this study, no relevant difference was found between the flap thicknesses obtained by IntraLase laser and ZyopticXP mechanical keratomes. Both keratomes resulted thinner flaps.
