Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate insulin resistance as the suggested cause of hyperandrogenism and treatment of such cases diagnosed as PCOS that insulin resistance should be taken into consideration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was performed on 30 PCOS and 30 control cases. Body mass index (BMI) measurements, basal serum glucose, insulin, free testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) levels were measured. The results, differences and similarities of serum glucose, insulin and free testosterone levels during OGTT, which lasted for 180 minutes were investigated. RESULTS: Significant difference was found among the levels of basal serum insulin, LH, free testosterone in both groups. There was no significant difference among the levels of serum glucose, FSH, DHEAS, and prolactin. In PCOS and control groups significant difference was found in serum insulin and free testosterone during OGTT. CONCLUSION: PCOS group was found to be heavier in weight with respect to BMI and significantly more hirsute according to the scoring of Ferriman Gallwey. Basal serum LH levels were significantly higher than the control group. PCOS group was also found to be hyperinsulinemic compared to control group.
