Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effect of spatial resolution and image segmentation to land use/cover classification accuracy in high-resolution satellite images. The study is applied to a test region at Çankaya district of Ankara. In this study, the multispectral QuickBird with 2.4 m and pan image with 0.64 m resolutions are used. The first step of the study involves, classification of QuickBird image with Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) method and then analyzing the accuracy with the ground truth data. According to classification of MSS bands, the overall and kappa accuracy is % 73, and %64 respectively. Then in the second step, the effect of spatial resolution on the accuracy of the classification is analyzed. Hence, the image is Pansharpened and then classified with MLC. According to result of this classification the overall and kappa classification accuracy is improved to % 73 and % 65 respectively. In the last step the classification method is supported with the object based segmentation technique. The accuracy of the results is improved much more by the application of an object based segmentation compared to the previous classification results. According to results of classification after object based segmentation of MSS bands the overall and kappa classification accuracy is improved to % 77 and % 69 respectively. On the other hand, classification after object based segmentation of Pansharpened bands the overall and kappa classification accuracy is improved to % 79 and % 73 respectively. The results show that the classification accuracy increased by the image segmentation and this provide detecting and delineating the land use features from high resolution satellite images with much more satisfaction. Key words: Land Use Classification, Maximum Likelihood Classification (MCL), Segmentation Method, Image Pan sharpening, Classification Accuracy.
