Katılımcıların %76,5’inde depresyon bulunmazken, %15.3’ü hafif, %3.1’i orta ve %5.1’i şiddetli depresyon göstermiştir.

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to determine the levels of loneliness and depression among community-dwelling older men and to examine the relationship between these two variables. Method: This descriptive-correlational study included community-dwelling older men living in a province in the Eastern Black Sea region of Türkiye (n = 98). The data collection tools included a Personal Information Form, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (short form). Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were used, and a p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of participants was 65.43 ± 3.75 years, and the average daily number of medications used was 1.33 ± 2.19. Most participants had primary education or lower, were married, and reported that their income met their expenses. The prevalence of chronic diseases was 54.1%, with hypertension (22.4%) and diabetes mellitus (18.4%) being the most common. The mean scores for the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 were 33.76 ± 9.75 and 3.02 ± 3.44, respectively. While 76.5% of participants had no depression, 15.3% had mild, 3.1% moderate, and 5.1% severe depression. A significant positive correlation was found between loneliness and depression scores (r = 0.540; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Loneliness among older men is at a low-to-moderate level, and most do not exhibit depression. Increased loneliness is associated with higher depression levels. Therefore, social support and awareness programs should be developed to prevent loneliness and depression in older adults.
