Abstract
Human beings, by their ontological nature, tend to make sense of environmental phenomena and establish a cognitive bond with them. Mythology is defined as a manifestation of humanity's effort to explain nature and natural events and as a symbolic form of expression. The nomadic lifestyle adopted by ancient Turkic societies increased the spiritual value attributed to natural elements; in this context, nature has acquired a central position in Turkic cosmology. Elements such as celestial bodies, fauna, and landforms have become part of the mythological imagination by being attributed sanctity. In particular, the association of some Turkic tribes with animal ancestors (ongun) such as wolves, deer, and eagles is one of the most concrete indicators of this situation. In this study, bird motifs in Irk Bitig, one of the oldest written documents of the Turkic language, are examined. Based on bird species such as the falcon, hoopoe, eagle, swan, raven, and crane in the text in question, it is aimed to reveal the symbolic equivalents of these figures in the Turkic cultural universe and their functions within the context of Irk Bitig. Through an intertextual and semiotic perspective, the semantic parallels between the omen's outcome (good or bad) and the mythological and cultural value of the bird are demonstrated. It has been determined that birds are not included in the omen texts purely by chance, but rather directly determine the outcome of the omen as a moral norm of the belief systems of the period.
