Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the key factors influencing the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) modules, focusing on environmental factors, cell material factors, and PV system devices that play critical roles in performance opti-mization. Efficiency is crucial for the economic viability and energy output of PV systems, making the identification of loss mechanisms essential for improvement. The overview embraces Photovoltaic (PV) module efficiency and its importance, PV system technologies, and current trends in PV module efficiency research. The study illustrated key factors that affect the performance and efficiency of PV modules as well as insights for improvement. The study addressed environmental variables such as tilt angle, wind direction, shading, ambient temperature, humidity, solar radiation, and dust. It also investigated the impact of cell materials, like corrosion, degradation, cracked cells, contact stability, and semiconductor selection. Further-more, PV system-level influences such as the size and quality of inverters, charge controllers, batteries, wiring methods, and grounding processes were examined to determine their combined impact on energy output. By understanding these indi-vidual and interactive factors, this study will help guide technical advancements and future research in enhancing PV mod-ule efficiency, with an emphasis on minimising losses, increasing system lifespan, and maximising energy conversion.
