Çalışmada Cumhuriyet’in tarımsal modernleşme, mekân oluşturma süreçleri kırılma noktaları üzerinden irdelenmiş ve Malatya Harası özelinde sınanmıştır. Yapılan kuramsal ve alana dayalı araştırmalar sonucunda Malatya Harası’nın, Cumhuriyet’in rasyonel, devletçi, makineleşmeye dayalı tarımsal modernleşme serüveninin yerleşke-teknik geliştirilen erken (50 öncesi), teknik yaygınlaştıran daha geç (50’lerden 90’lara) ve neo-liberal günümüz (90’lardan günümüze- 90’lardan 2020-23 depremlerine ve 2020-23 depremleri sonrası başlıklarıyla evrelendirilebilen) dönemlerini etkin biçimde yansıttığı görülmüştür. Bu bağlamda Hara’nın 50 öncesinde çok fonksiyonlu yapısını, ana giriş-Atatürk meydanı-idare-tavlalar-padok dizilimini, yakın mesafeden toplumla ilişkilerini, önemli üretim yapılarını, seküler sosyal mekân kullanımlarını, lojmanları oluşturduğu; 50 sonrasında teknik mekânlarını çoğalttığı, seküler yapıdaki esnemelerle ibadet birimini eklediği ve 90 sonrası dönemde bahçe kiralamaları yoluyla özelleştirmeleri bir oranda somutladığı, bu dönemin 2020-23 depremleri sonrası geç evresinde bazı önemli özgün yapılarını kaybettiği, niteliği sınırlı olan yeni bazı inşalara sahne olduğu saptanmıştır. Sonuç olarak Malatya Harası’nın Cumhuriyet’in tüm süreçleri içinden tarımsal, sosyal, morfolojik pek çok önemli birikim getirdiği, bu birikimlerin tarımın, tarım mekânsallığının kavranmasına ve geleceğe aktarılmasına ışık tuttuğu belirlenmiştir.
Abstract
It can be argued that the Republic reinterpreted the rational, statist, and mechanization-based approach to agricultural modernization through its own policies and embodied this approach in agricultural and livestock settlements. The Malatya Sultansuyu Stud Farm (a farm incorporating horse breeding), which was inherited from the Ottoman Empire and embodies a significant historical legacy, has been subject to several demolition decisions following the 2020 earthquake and the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake. Therefore, documenting its historical and spatial values has become even more important. Although insufficiently studied, the Stud Farm constitutes a significant model that exemplifies agricultural transformations. This study aims to understand, through the Malatya Campus, the accumulated knowledge and experience of Republican modernization concerning agriculture and agricultural spatiality, which have received limited attention in the literature but whose importance has become increasingly evident in the face of serious crises such as pandemics and earthquakes. The study examines the processes of agricultural modernization and spatial formation during the Republican period through major turning points and tests these processes through the case of the Malatya Stud Farm. Theoretical and field-based research demonstrates that the Malatya Stud Farm effectively reflects the different phases of the Republic’s rational, statist, and mechanization-based agricultural modernization: the early period before the 1950s, characterized by the development of the settlement and its technical infrastructure; the later period from the 1950s to the 1990s, characterized by the dissemination of technical practices; and the neoliberal period from the 1990s to the present, which can be further divided into the period from the 1990s to the 2020–2023 earthquakes and the period following these earthquakes. In this context, it was found that, before the 1950s, the Stud Farm established its multifunctional structure, including the sequence of the main entrance, Atatürk Square, administration building, stables, and paddocks, as well as its close relationship with the surrounding community, important production buildings, secular social-space uses, and housing for its employees. After the 1950s, it expanded its technical spaces and, with the gradual relaxation of its secular character, added a place of worship. In the post-1990 period, it partially reflected the processes of privatization through garden leases. During the later phase of this period, following the 2020 and 2023 earthquakes, it lost some of its significant original structures and witnessed the construction of several new buildings of limited architectural quality. Consequently, the Malatya Stud Farm has accumulated significant agricultural, social, and morphological knowledge throughout the different periods of the Republic. These accumulated values and experiences provide important insights into understanding agriculture and agricultural spatiality and contribute to their preservation and transmission to future generations.
