Abstract
This study examines the Close Enough photography exhibition, organized as part of Magnum Photos’ 75th anniversary and presented at C/O Berlin. Taking its title from Robert Capa’s well-known statement, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough,” the exhibition reopens this notion to discussion within the context of contemporary photographic practice. The aim of the study is to examine how the notion of proximity attributed to Capa is interpreted by the twelve women Magnum photographers featured in the exhibition and through which conceptual frameworks it acquires new meanings. The study was designed as a qualitative case study. The research data consist of observations obtained through an on-site visit to the exhibition at C/O Berlin, as well as artist statements, curatorial texts, exhibition publications, and promotional materials. The data were evaluated through document analysis. Findings indicate that the participating photographers reinterpret proximity not primarily as a matter of physical distance, but through concepts such as trust, empathy, privacy, belonging, representation, memory, and witnessing. Consequently, Close Enough can be regarded as a contemporary exhibition that develops polyphonic interpretations of the notion of proximity attributed to Capa and transforms these interpretations into photographic production.
