Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this study is to examine the strategic relationship between the professional structure of management boards and sporting success in European football clubs. Method: The study was conducted within the scope of comparative case analysis, one of the qualitative research designs. Ten clubs were selected: Real Madrid, FC Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, Olympique Lyonnais, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, AFC Ajax, SSC Napoli, and SL Benfica. Data were collected through document analysis from the clubs' official reports and international sources such as UEFA, CIES Football Observatory, Deloitte, and Transfermarkt, then classified and interpreted using thematic analysis. Results: In the clubs examined, it has been determined that professional structures with a strong presence in areas such as finance, law, marketing, communications, data science, human resources, and infrastructure-academy management within the boards of directors are directly related to sporting success and make this success more stable. It was found that professional diversity strengthens crisis management, financial planning, sponsorship and media strategies, as well as data-driven player and academy policies. Three key elements were identified as essential for sustaining success: strategic alignment, functional distribution and cultural integration. In the cases of PSG and Manchester United, it was found that despite professional capacity, shortcomings in strategic alignment and cultural integration limited consistent success at the European level. In contrast, at Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, Napoli, and Benfica, it was determined that competitiveness could be sustained despite limited budgets thanks to data-driven decision-making processes and the institutional integration of infrastructure investments into management. Conclusion: Professional diversity alone is not sufficient; when supported by strategic alignment, functional distribution and cultural integration, it strengthens not only sporting performance but also financial sustainability and corporate reputation. Data-driven decision-making, the inclusion of infrastructure investments in management at the corporate level, and merit-based governance structures offer feasible policy recommendations for clubs in Turkey by generating lasting competitive advantage.
