Abstract

In the current research the effects of role exchange and social context on the idea generation was investigated in the brainwriting paradigm (where the participants exchanged their ideas in a written format). The participants randomly assigned to the role exchange condition changed their roles after the first brainstorming" session. However, those in the no-role exchange condition continued to use their same roles during the two brainstorming sessions. The results indicated that the participants in the role exchange condition generated a higher number of ideas than those in the no-role exchange condition. Interactive dyads were also found to have more ideas than nominal dyads. These results were discussed in light of social identity theory and the brainstorming literature.
